Registration of Independent Schools
The DfE has updated its guidance for those who wish to register an independent school: Independent school registration. It is a criminal offence to run an unregistered independent school - defined as provision of full-time education of 5 or more children of compulsory school age or for one or more children with an Education, Health and Care plan.
Please note that the DfE ( not ISI) is the registration authority and regulator of independent schools, and as such is the body sets the standards which must be met to achieve and maintain registration. Enquiries concerning registration and the guidance should be addressed the DfE using the contact details in the guidance.
ISI is approved to inspect independent schools in membership of the Associations which form the Independent Schools Council. Schools which would like to be inspected by ISI must apply for Association membership.
