Announcement

Appointment of Chief Inspector

The Board of Directors of the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is delighted to announce that Kate Richards has been appointed as Chief Inspector with immediate effect. The appointment has been approved by the Members of ISI and, very recently, by the Secretary of State for Education.

Peter Williamson, the current Chairman of Directors, said “Kate joined ISI as Head of Inspection Performance in September 2016 and has been one of our two Acting Chief Inspectors since Christine Ryan’s retirement. I am delighted that she has now been appointed as Chief Inspector following a comprehensive recruitment exercise conducted by ISI’s Nominations Committee.”

Christine Swabey, who will become Chairman of Directors on 1st July 2017, said “I am greatly looking forward to working with Kate and her team, to ensure the inspection process underpins the delivery of a first class education for all the children and young people attending ISI inspected schools. I wish her every success in her new role.”

Stephen Cole, Interim Chief Executive: "I am delighted that Kate will be leading ISI into the new era. Having worked alongside her during the last four months, from first-hand experience I can reassure all that she will bring a blend of personal empathy and professional steel to this pivotal role in the independent sector."

From the Chief Inspector

I am delighted to have been appointed and I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for the warm welcome I have received since joining ISI.

I am very much looking forward to working with you all as we build on the strengths of the new framework developed under Christine’s leadership. I look forward to our continuing focus on inspection as a process which supports school improvement for the sake of our children and young people.

With very best wishes,

Kate Richards
