Further to our previous messages about the future of school inspections, we can confirm that ISI has been in extensive discussions with the Department for Education (DfE) about the future of inspections for independent schools. Discussions have been robust, centring on the best way to deliver the shared aim of thorough and transparent inspection, especially of all aspects of compliance - at a time of greatly heightened awareness of safeguarding in schools by the general public. Discussions at Brighton Education Conference

The Independent Schools Inspectorate welcomes the Secretary of State's comments regarding the importance of having the best possible system to ensure excellence in independent schools. Since 2000, ISI has been the body approved by the Secretary of State for the inspection of schools in membership of independent schools associations. This has covered 80% of the children in private schools in England. Our work is monitored on behalf of the Department for Education by Ofsted and a public report is made annually to the Secretary of State. Ofsted has repeatedly awarded ISI the highest judgement available for inspectorates and has in particular commended our inspection of regulatory compliance. Read more
